The National Audit Office (NAO) is a public sector organisation that is independent of government. We scrutinise public spending for Parliament to help the government in its drive to improve public services, nationally and locally.
The Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG), Amyas Morse, is an Officer of the House of Commons and leads the NAO. He has statutory authority to examine and report to Parliament on whether departments and the bodies they fund have used their resources efficiently, effectively, and with economy.
We audit the financial statements of all government departments and many other public bodies. Our other work comprises value-for-money reports, investigations and other reviews, most of which are presented to the Committee of Public Accounts. We also provide support for other select committees.
Our work leads to savings and other efficiency gains worth many millions of pounds: £734 million in 2016.
